QUETTA: Pakistani authorities yesterday detained a second leading anti-government lawyer just days after he was freed from nearly three months under house arrest.
Ali Ahmad Kurd was first held in November when President Pervez Musharraf imposed emergency rule and sacked judges under public order law. He was released last week but was detained again.
The move follows the detention last week of another prominent anti-Musharraf lawyer, Supreme Court bar association president Aitzaz Ahsan, as part of a continuing government crackdown on the legal community.
"Mr Kurd was trying to leave the southwestern city of Quetta. He has been served a detention order and will be under house arrest for 30 days," police said.
Kurd and Ahsan were key members of the legal team that last year successfully challenged Musharraf's suspension of Pakistan's chief justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Kurd said he had tried to go to address lawyers in Lahore.
"Our struggle for the independence of judiciary will continue and such steps cannot deter us," he said.
