CJP calls upon nation to support independent judiciary.

LAHORE: The Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has urged the entire nation to support lawyers’ struggle for the rule of law, independent judiciary and supremacy of the constitution in the country.

Addressing a joint session of lawyers organisations including Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and Lahore District Bar (LDBA) here Thursday morning at LHC, he said the supremacy of the constitution and independent judiciary are vitally essential for the development of the nation.

The deposed CJ appreciated the lawyers for their perisistant and tough struggle for the independence of judiciary and supremacy of the constitution.

Iftikhar Muhammad said that lawyers’ struggle brought awareness among the people regarding the vital need for rule of law in the country which would guarantee the commonman’s rights as well as national development. All this is possible only with an independent judiciary, he observed.

He said the lawyers were not furthering their personal interests by the movement and this was the reason which has impressed people and they joined lawyers’ struggle for the attainment of justice.

The deposed Chief Justice observed that justice cannot be delivered unless the judiciary is independent, there is rule of law and the constitution rules supreme.

He thanked and appreciated the warm reception by the residents of Lahore, including lawyers, civil society, students and others. “Not only lawyers but people from all walks of life and all shades of society have joined the long march—despite sizzling heat of June”, he highlighted.

He clarified that Supreme Court is not above the constitution and is bound to interpret laws within the framework defined by the constitution. This is Supreme Court’s right as well as obligation, he stressed.

He appreciated the role of print and electronic media and due importance given by them to the movement for independence of the judiciary. He noted with appreciation that media carried out its duty for the rule of law and independence of the judiciary in the country with admirable sense of responsibility.
The deposed CJ hoped that lawyers’ struggle would reach its logical conclusion, saying this was possible only when they follow three slogans—unity, faith and discipline during the movement.

He said people of all the four provinces wanted “independent judiciary” knowing it is directly linked to the restoration of fundamental rights and development of the country in every field.
