Judiciary independence slogan of nation: CJP.

SIALKOT: Deposed Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Thursday said ‘independence of judiciary’ has become a slogan of lawyers, civil society and the media. Addressing lawyers telephonically here at District Bar Sialkot, he paid rich tributes to the lawyers who “rendered sacrifices of their lives, got injured and served in prison.”

He said there should not be any differences between Pakistan Bar Council and Punjab Bar Council. Lawyers must remain united to further the cause of independence of the judiciary, he stressed. Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said in every era sees the birth of ‘Mir Sadiq’ and ‘Mir Jafar’ but “the thing of satisfaction is that no such person is amongst the lawyers.

Iftikhar sees success at hand

SIALKOT: Deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that the independence of judiciary is inevitable for good governance as on Thursday the legal fraternity across the country kept up their protest for the restoration of deposed judges.
Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was addressing Sialkot District Bar Association by telephone here Thursday. The deposed CJ said that the movement for the restoration of judges has geared up with the passage of time and it has been further energized.

About suo motu cases initiated by himself in the past, he said many people had obtained relief through the orders passed in the suo motu cases and media cooperated most in this regard. He said the lawyers’ movement is near to achieve its goal, adding that incumbent government had failed to take any decision in accordance with the aspirations of people following the February 18 elections.

He said the restoration of independent judiciary was vital for the rule of law, release of missing persons and provision of justice to everyone. Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said that the people had stood up for the supremacy of the Constitution, rule of law and the independence of judiciary. People had joined the lawyers’ struggle for the attainment of justice at their doorsteps, he added.

He said justice could not be delivered to people unless the judiciary was independent, rule of law prevailed and the Constitution ruled supreme in the governance. — PPI Online adds: In Islamabad, the lawyers peaceful rally, conducted within legal norms and parameters strongly condemned the sacking of the judges of superior courts by President Pervez Musharraf on Nov 3, 2007.

The participants, which also included masses, chanted anti-Musharraf slogans and also burnt his posters. Severe criticism was levelled against Asif Ali Zardari and Mian Nawaz Sharif. The participants also demanded to arrange a siege of the Parliament and Army House.

The protesting lawyers also held a one-hour symbolic hunger strike camp in which they all participated turn by turn. Our correspondent adds from Lahore: The lawyers on Thursday observed complete boycott of courts and held protest rallies in provincial metropolis to press the government for immediate restoration of the deposed judges.

It was observed that a large number of lawyers participated in the rally due to the pleasant weather.Activists of the PML-N, Pakhtunkhawa Milli Awami Party, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf, Tehrik-e-Khaksaar, Labour Party and Judicial Activism Panel (JAP) participated in the rally.

Political activists held party flags and chanted slogans in favour of respective leaders. PML-N MPA Dr Saeed Elahi also attended the protest. A dozen individuals of Christian community from Dr Saeed’s constituency also joined the rally.

The lawyers of the Lahore Bar Association (LBA) marched from Aiwan-e-Adl courts after their general house meeting. They joined the Lahore High Court Bar Association lawyers who after holding their general house meeting waited for them at GPO Chowk.

The lawyers then joined other protesters and together they marched towards the Punjab Assembly as they chanted slogans against the government and in favour of sacked judges. Few traders of Hall Road market showered protesters with rose petals. On reaching Chairing Cross Chowk, the lawyers and political leaders delivered speeches and promised to support the lawyers’ movement.

Earlier, in the general house meeting of the LHCBA, speakers stressed the importance of restoration of sacked judges. They also criticized the government over delaying the restoration. They said lawyers’ movement would continue until the restoration of all judges. They said August 14 was the last deadline for the government to restore the judges otherwise they could adopt any measures including blockade of courts, holding long march, staging countrywide sit-ins and starting civil disobedience movement.

Pakistan Bar Council member Hamid Khan, LHCBA President Anwar Kamal, Vice-President Mian Muhammad Aslam and Supreme Court Bar Association Secretary Chaudhry Amin Javed spoke on the occasion.
