* Lawyers' Co-ordination Committee chairman vows support to armed forces in case of war
ISLAMABAD: Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Aitzaz Ahsan on Sunday asked the government to move review in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) against adding the names of some Pakistani religious organisations to its consolidated list.
The UNSC Al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee had placed the names of three leaders of Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and a Saudi operative on a terrorist watch-list on December 10.
Aitzaz, the chairman of the Lawyers' Co-ordination Committee, told a press conference at his residence that lawyers would support the armed forces if India imposed war on Pakistan. He said war could not resolve any problem. He hoped that the Indian leadership would avoid the war hysteria.
"We will play our role for the defence and security of the country setting aside personal differences," he added. Aitzaz said the nation was concerned over the violation of Pakistani airspace by Indian aircraft.
He said the Pakistani media had acted responsibly while the Indian media had fanned war sentiments. "The Pak-India leadership should take concerted steps for preventing war,” he said, adding that either India should provide evidence of its allegations about Pakistan-based organisations’ alleged involvement in the Mumbai attacks or avoid levelling baseless accusation.
"If India does not provide any solid proof about Pakistan's alleged involvement in the Mumbai attacks and does not stop levelling baseless allegations against Pakistan, then Pakistan should file a review in the UN Security Council against the resolution of its committee putting the names of Pakistani religious organisations on its consolidated list," Aitzaz said. He said the option of a review had been provided in the UN Charter.
SCBA President Ali Ahmad Kurd also endorsed Aitzaz’s views. However, he demanded the government call back the army officers working in civilian departments for the defence of the country.
He declined to answer several questions saying that everything about the judiciary would be decided in the Lawyers' Convention scheduled on December 22. Former SCBA presidents -- Munir A Malik, Justice (r) Tariq Mehmood, Rawalpindi Bench Bar Association President Sardar Asmatullah, Islamabad Bar Association President Haroonur Rasheed and sacked chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry's spokesman Athar Minallah were also present on the occasion.
