Karachi: President Musharraf should step down immediately, and if parties who come into the parliament refrain from restoring the chief justice and other superior court judges, a countrywide agitation would be launched against them, the legal fraternity demanded at a Karachi Bar Association (KBA) general body meeting held Wednesday at the Shuhada-e-Punjab Hall.Political parties who enter into a deal with the establishment for the sake of power and violate their own commitment of the restoration of judges would be dealt with accordingly, they said. KBA president, Mehmood-ul-Hasan, presented a number of demands and warned that lawyers from bar associations all over the country would stage protest demonstrations at Shahrah-e-Dastoor (Constitution Avenue, Islamabad), if their demands were not met by March 8. This agitation, Hasan said, would lead to a revolution.Among this list is the demand for the newly-elected parliament to restore the CJP and 60 other superior court judges. Moreover, lawyers said, President Musharraf should go back to the barracks. The other demands pertained to the registration of murder cases against President Musharraf, the sacking of an elected government on October 12, 1999, the murder of Akber Bugti, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and the killing of innocent people and children in Wana and Waziristan by Pakistan’s armed forces.Hasan vowed that the lawyers’ movement would continue till these demands are met. He said that the results of the February 18 elections were a reflection of the anti-Musharraf and anti-US feelings in Pakistan, because people had routed all the bigwigs of the Musharraf regime. The lawyers also demanded that Ali Ahmed Kurd, Tariq Mehmood, and Aetezaz Ahsan be released. They paid rich tributes to Muneer A. Malik who united the lawyers for the rule of law and the supremacy of the constitution.
