ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president, Aitzaz Ahsan, on Wednesday said that lawyers would prosecute President Pervez Musharraf, former prime minister Shaukat Aziz, caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmain Soomro and caretaker Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz for illegally detaining chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry and his family.
In his brief address to a couple of hundred lawyers and civil society members soon after his arrival at Islamabad International Airport, Aitzaz said an FIR had been registered against President Musharraf and his allies for illegally detaining former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and his family members.
Earlier, lawyers and civil society members accorded a welcome to Aitzaz when he landed at Islamabad Airport for the first time after his detention. Lawyers from different bars started converging on the airport from 3.00 pm. Holding anti-Musharraf posters and banners, they were chanting slogans seeking immediate release of the deposed judges and pledging to continue their strike till restoration of democracy and judiciary in the country.
IDBA president skips rally: Interestingly, Islamabad District Bar Association (IDBA) President Haroonur Rasheed did not attend the rally. There’re rumours afloat that Rasheed was offered some position by some senior government officials and he was giving the offer a serious thought.
Rawalpindi Bar President Sardar Asmatullah said he could not reach Rasheed on his cell phone despite repeated attempts. Daily Times also could not contact Rasheed because his cell phone was powered off.
