* Speakers say PBC victimising lawyers to sabotage movement
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) on Monday boycotted courts in protest against the suspension of the licence of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association President Abdul Latif Afridi.
The LHCBA General House meeting called the suspension of the licence by the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) a form of “political victimisation”.
Sabotage: Addressing the meeting, the speakers condemned the PBC, saying the council was suspending the licences of lawyers in a bid to sabotage the lawyers’ movement for the reinstatement of the sacked judges and for the establishment of the rule of law.
LHCBA President Anwar Kamal said that lawyers were aware that the PBC was suspending licences of lawyers on political bases. He warned the government to reinstate sacked chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry or it would remain no more functional, adding that lawyers did not want to destabilise the government. LHCBA Secretary Rana Asadullah Khan said that the PBC was following the government’s agenda of sabotaging the lawyers’ movement. He said that the licence suspension was the victimisation of lawyers and demonstrated the council’s political affiliations. Former LHCBA president Ahmed Awais said that lawyers were struggling for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary at the cost of their personal interests. He added that the return of exiled politicians to the country and the restoration of democracy was the result of the lawyers’ movement.
Allah Bakhsh Gondal advocate supported various bar associations for banning the entry of the federal law minister and the attorney general on their premises. He said that acts like the suspension of licences would not weaken the lawyers’ movement. staff report
