Long march registration begins at City Courts.

Karachi: The registration of lawyers who wish to participate in the Long March started on Tuesday at the City Courts, and 165 lawyers confirmed their participation on the first day of registration, Karachi Bar Association (KBA) Secretary General Naeem Qureshi has said.

A caravan of lawyers would start from Karachi on March 12 and elsewhere in the country. The lawyers would stage a sit-in at Constitution Avenue, Islamabad, on March 16 and would sit there till the attainment of their goals — the restoration of the judiciary, and the reinstatement of deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Registration for participation in the long march will continue till February 28, Qureshi said. He further said that most of the lawyers wanted to travel to Islamabad on their own expense. Ten CNG buses have also been arranged by the KBA.

The caravan would leave the city on the morning of March 12 via the National Highway and would stop at various junctions where the respective bars associations would host the participants.

“It is premature to say anything but if [President Asif Ali Zardari] comes up with something, an appropriate decision will be taken by the lawyers’ leadership,” Qureshi said when asked to comment on the President’s reported remarks that he would deal with the lawyers before the planned long march.

The Malir Bar Association has made separate arrangements. Lawyers from the City Courts will first go to the Malir Bar, and then proceed together from there, the KBA secretary general said, adding that the Sindh High Court Bar Association has also formalised its programme.
