According to a statement of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has taken notice of the Interior Minister Rehman Malik's statement carried by the media as well as the investigative report of The News International's correspondent Umer Cheema in connection with the dual nationality of Pakistan Muslim League-Q's MNA Shahnaz Shaikh.
Rehman Malik had said in his statement that although there were a number of assembly members secretly holding dual nationality, action was taken only against a handful of such lawmakers. "A list containing names of the remaining members will be made available in case the court or government issued a directive in this regard," he had offered.
The SC Registrar Office has asked the Interior Minister Rehman Malik to submit details in support of his claims to the court by September 27 so that action against such legislators could be initiated under Article 5 and 25 of the Constitution.
The Registrar Office has also sent separate letters to Umer Cheema and PML-Q MNA Shahnaz Shaikh through Secretary Assembly.
The SC statement further said that a hearing of this matter will be held in the court if such a need arose.
