ISLAMABAD/LAHORE/ KARACHI: Ali Ahmad Kurd, one of the leading lawyers calling for the reinstatement of sacked chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, won the election for the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Tuesday, according to unofficial results.
Kurd secured 144 votes in Islamabad, while his rival M Zafar got 70 votes.
In Lahore, Kurd won 1,009 votes while Zafar got 506 votes. For the seat of vice president (VP) from Punjab, Javed Jalal Mian won 841 votes while Iqbal Mahmood Awan got 459 votes.
In Peshawar, Kurd polled 62 votes while Zafar bagged 37. Muhammad Jamil Khan won the VP seat by getting 66 votes against 26 for his opponent Saeed Akhtar.
Kurd got 44 votes in Quetta against 18 polled in his rival’s favour. Ayaz Sawati defeated Zahid Malik by 46 votes against 17 in the VP election.
The newly elected SCBA president won the polling in Karachi as well, securing 138 votes, while Zafar got 75 votes according to the unofficial vote count. Suhail Hayat Rana won 304 votes to become VP while his rival Faqir Javed got 228. staff report
