CJ holds consultations about improving judiciary.

KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday held consultations here on improving the judiciary. He presided over a meeting in connection with the Supreme Court Registry building, which lasted for several hours. The Chief Justice also met with the members of Karachi chapter of Supreme Court Bar Association. A court press release said the CJP held a meeting with Chief Justice of Sindh High Court along with other Judges. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange information and ideas about improving the output and efficiency of High Court and lower Courts. During the meeting, the CJP emphasized the need to provide speedy and appropriate justice to the people in order to come up to the expectations of the people of the country who have great hope from the present superior judiciary. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry underlined the need to tackle the backlog of cases on war footing. He asked that cases related to violation of fundamental rights, bail matters, family issues, juvenile offences, rent matters, drug and terrorism offences should be dealt with on fast track basis for quick disposal. He expected that the Judges of the High Court should not only dispose of the backlog and devise mechanism to reduce the delay in the proceedings of the cases but also to visit various prisons in the province to alleviate the suffering of the prisoners. The CJP was informed by the Chief Justice of High Court of Sindh that at present, against the sanctioned posts of 40 judges only 18 judges are working in the Sindh High Court. This is causing immense problems in providing quick justice to the people. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry agreed with the assertion and promised to take all necessary measures to fill up vacancies of judges of the Sindh High Court. The Chief Justice of Pakistan thanked the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court and other Judges for attending the meeting on such a short notice. He appreciated the efforts of the Judges in executing National Judicial Policy 2009 and further encouraged them to put in extra efforts to achieve the targets envisaged in the policy.
