Lawyers mark March 9 as black day.

KARACHI: The lawyers' fraternity will observe a black day today (Wednesday) to mark the 4th anniversary of the removal of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on March 9, 2007 by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf. Office-bearers of the Pakistan Bar Council, the Sindh Bar Council and the Karachi Bar Association including Zia Ahmed Awan advocate, Iftikhar Qaimkhani, Muhammad Aqil, Abdul Hameed Yousufi, Mehmood-ul-Hassan and Khalid Munawar announced this decision at a joint press conference on Tuesday.
They said that March 9 is remembered as the day when a dictator tried to curb the independence of judiciary and lawyers across the country will observe it as a black day. "Keeping the interest of the people in mind, court proceedings will not be boycotted," they said. Lawyers will wear black armbands and hoist black flags at bar offices across Sindh.
Denouncing Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Asma Jahangir's remarks about the apex court judges, they said that the SCBA president has lost the mandate of the lawyers due to her controversial statements. They said that the lawyers will continue their struggle for an independent judiciary and will never compromise on this issue. They urged the lawyers' community to maintain unity for sustaining democracy and the independence of judiciary.
